What Brennan's Doing Now

This is a /now page, inspired by Derek Sivers. It's a snapshot of what I'm focused on right nowβ€”updated regularly to reflect my current work, projects, and life.

Life & Work

I recently graduated in April 2025 with a Bachelor of Arts in English (Honours) from Mount Royal University with a 3.8 GPA. My honours thesis, How the English Degree Will Save the World, examined the transformative potential of literary studies and introduced "bloodwriting" as a bridge between Indigenous knowledge and digital practices.

I'm currently focused on building πŸ“ Berry House, my new initiative offering JAMstack web development and content strategy services. Berry House helps independent creators, non-profits, and small teams build fast, accessible websites while maintaining ownership of their content and platform.

Current Projects

  • Berry House: Launching and growing my web development and content strategy practice, focusing on JAMstack sites with Eleventy, Hugo, and Tailwind CSS.
  • Old-school Blogging: Writing frequent posts about a wide variety of topics on my Medium.
  • Theme Development: Actively maintaining open-source projects including:
  • Write Club: Transitioning from President to Founder after three years of leadership. The club now has over 100 members and successfully published its first anthology, On the Fringe: A Collection of Filth, in March 2024.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Published PRAIRIE BOYSPIRIT: An NDN Memoir (December 2024) β€” Essay collection chronicling Indigenous identity and urban prairie experiences
  • Published Your Brothers Keeper: A Love Letter to Dostoevsky (August 2024) β€” Poetry exploring Russian literature through a decolonial lens
  • Article published in Mount Royal Humanities Review: "Indigenous Resilience in Illustration: 'Nimkii' and the Story of Survival" (April 2024)
  • Led Write Club's first anthology publication with 20+ student contributors

Writing & Publishing

I'm actively writing and publishing across multiple platforms:

  • Long-form essays: Medium and Substack
  • Poetry: BK Poetry on Tumblr
  • Micro-essays: Bluesky, Threads, and Mastodon
  • Technical writing: Dev.to and documentation for open-source projects

Learning & Growth

Deepening my expertise in:

  • Eleventy and Hugo with advanced IndieWeb integration (webmentions, microformats)
  • TypeScript for build tools and CLI development
  • Accessibility testing and WCAG 2.1 AA compliance
  • Sustainable business models for creative/technical work

Community Building

Creating accessible spaces for writers, makers, and learners through Discord communities, occasional Patreon updates, and in-person Berry House events in Calgary.
